The food and beverage industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors in India, encompassing local production,
wholesale and retail distribution, as well as imports and exports. To ensure consumer safety and quality standards,
India has consolidated its food laws, aligning them with global regulatory frameworks such as those in the US and EU,
while continuously adapting them to Indian needs.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) serves as the primary regulatory body,
overseeing the food industry and ensuring compliance with food safety, hygiene, labelling, and advertising standards.
However, with frequent amendments and evolving regulations, staying compliant requires constant vigilance.
Regulatory Framework
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) oversees the comprehensive regulation of food safety and food products.
It is entrusted with the critical functions of licensing, monitoring, and imposing penalties on Food Business Operators. The Food
Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which came into force in 2011, harmonized and replaced various existing statutes governing food
safety and food products, thereby consolidating them into a single, unified framework.
In addition, FSSAI has introduced over 20+ regulations covering licensing, labelling, import, advertisement,
claims, and food standards, all of which must be adhered to for operating a food business in India.
